Duk-tales: Townsville Thunder – Day 15

Winters coming !                                   Saturday 12th May, 2018

Yesterday’s ride was rather fresh however the forecast for this morning was 3 degrees. Russell Holdsworth of Mt Isa Chapter messaged me during the evening to invite me to ride with him at 6am as he was headed for Darwin. As good an idea this may have been as it would have meant a run for home in one day neither crackers nor I relished having icy testicles stuck to our seats. True to form the ride out at 8am was as cold as a polar bears dick. Now, I had been envious of young Crackers for working with only the 2 saddlebags and not having to on load/offload his gear each day. But low and behold he did not have room for any warm clothing, understandable as it was summer when we left home. Today I pondered this while wearing a singlet, long sleeve T, a Hoody and the wet weather jacket to block the wind. As a consolation the Softail S is fitted with heated hand grips. Geoff said “I’ll just have to harden up”.

Our exit from Mt Isa was a little precarious with cattle lining the verges but in no time we were thru the hills, overtaking Trucks carrying explosives, cattle and other such necessities. At Camooweal it is time to play find the Turtle Neck in the loo as Willy had shrunk to the size of a thimble. The tail wind that blew us into Camooweal turns into a heavy cross wind of some 60kph making the bikes lean left to a long right hand bend. At one point a gush blew both of us half across the road. I note that there are no termite mounds on the plains of the Barkly. Exactly 133k’s from Camooweal well over the NT Border I opted to donate my Chapter T shirt and placed it onto a termite mound facing Queensland. It looks great! Lunch at Barkly Homestead and blink through Tenant Creek so we can make Wauchope by 4:30pm followed by a night of talking Dutch to the new young barmaid with Geoff making reasonable efforts to convert his poor German into Dutch. All the barmaids were very friendly but not easy to talk to as 2 Feminists railroaded the conversation of and on into the night.
